Workflow assistant
The workflow assistant is a chat that builds, changes and debugs workflows with you. It reads what a workflow can use — the node catalog, your connections, your Tables, your mailboxes and emails, your workflows, their runs and this documentation — then proposes a workflow or a change. Nothing is written until you accept the proposal.
Open it with With the assistant when you create a workflow ("Create with the assistant"), or from the Assistant column of the editor, next to the canvas. On the error of a failed step, Ask the assistant opens it with a message asking it to explain the failure and propose a fix.
How a turn works
- The model is the one an administrator chose for the "Workflow assistant" use on the Connections page, or another allowed model picked under the message field. It must be able to call tools (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral…); otherwise the assistant says so before calling anything.
- The tools are the same as those of the MCP server: read the catalog and one node in full, check connections, list Tables, search your mailboxes (headers and previews, never a full body), read workflows and runs, search the documentation, and run a test run of a draft on a real email.
- Read-only. The assistant calls the tools without write access: it cannot create a draft, publish, create a table or send. A test run sends nothing, but its AI nodes call their model, which is billed.
- Bounded. A message allows a limited number of tool rounds (
ASSISTANT_MAX_TURNS, 16 by default) and a conversation a token budget; beyond it, the assistant stops and says why. One turn at a time per conversation. - Saved as it goes. Messages, tool calls and proposals are stored during the turn: closing the tab or a restart loses nothing, and the conversation is read back in full.
Proposals
When the assistant has a workflow or a change that passes validation — the same checks as publication — it shows a proposal card: what changes (nodes added, changed or removed, links), what to check, and what is needed before it can run (a table to create, a connection to set up, a setting only you can choose). A proposal the assistant could not make valid never reaches you: it goes back to the model to be fixed.
- Accept creates the draft (a new workflow) or updates the draft of the workflow you are editing. It never publishes: you test and publish as usual.
- Outdated: if the draft changed since the assistant read it, accepting refuses to overwrite it; ask for a new proposal.
- One click, one workflow: a second click on Accept creates nothing more.
- AI usage and cost appear under AI usage and costs, in the "Workflow assistant" context.
